Comment on One Martyr Down: The Untold Story Of A Canadian Peacekeeper Killed At War by Bill Shorten https://legionmagazine.com/one-martyr-down-the-untold-story-of-a-canadian-peacekeeper-killed-at-war/#comment-58615 Mon, 15 Jun 2020 08:14:00 +0000 https://legionmagazine.wpengine.com/?p=12126#comment-58615 He was my commanding officer for 2 years when I was in the Essex and Kent Scottish regiment (Windsor, ON). I will never forget his unrelenting push to turn me into a real soldier. He made me hold out my FN-C1A1 in front of me until every last ounce of muscle strength was exhausted. I hated him and loved him at the same time. He was the Wolf, and I was the sheep. I get choked up every time I hear his name, and remind myself of what he (and his wife) had to endure. I will always love him and consider him my lost brother. He was responsible for changing me – for turning a sheep into a man.

Comment on Choose our cover for the next issue of Canada’s Ultimate Story! by william green https://legionmagazine.com/choose-our-cover-for-the-next-issue-of-canadas-ultimate-story-bob/#comment-58611 Thu, 11 Jun 2020 12:56:00 +0000 https://legionmagazine.wpengine.com/?p=64326#comment-58611 I sincerely hope any story about The Battle of Britain describes the importance of “Convoys from Nova Scotia” which included, among other things, AVGAS, (100 octane gasoline) some of which came from Imperial Oil’s Dartmouth Refinery and was escorted to Britain by RN & RCN Warships. I am sure PM Churchill intended to include the Oil Refiners, Merchant Seamen and RN & RCN Sailors who brought this most valuable commodity to Britain when he voiced his Tribute to “the few” who saved Britain in 1940.

Comment on Sinking the Bismarck by Harold https://legionmagazine.com/sinking-the-bismarck/#comment-58605 Thu, 28 May 2020 23:49:00 +0000 https://legionmagazine.wpengine.com/?p=31564#comment-58605 Very much enjoyed this article. My Dad served on the HMCS St. Clair, one of the WWI era “four stackers” that Canada acquired from the US when the war broke out. One of his strongest recollections and a story he was fond of telling, was when their destroyer was assigned out of the Clyde as sub screen to the Rodney around the time of this action with the Bismark. They came under heavy german bombing and he always marveled at how their C.O. was able to watch the bombs leave the bomber and weave the ship with hard rudder action between the falling bomb spreads.

The child that relies on their parent’s strength, and the parent, part of those caught in the crossfire, doing her best to stay sane.

The French commander Marshal Foch said it was the finest act of the war. Both Regiments were awarded an Honorary Distinction – an Oakleaf and Acorn device. Still worn by both Regiments today. War respects neither age nor gender as history has recorded down through the ages. Version could have been taken anywhere…pre or post-war.
